JOE Calzaghe has an extra trick up his sleeve for his fight with Roy Jones Jnr - a high tech punchbag designed by an old friend.

Joe Calzaghe on the special punch bagCounter-Punch, launched yesterday in the build-up to Mr Calzaghe's November 8 light-heavyweight world championship defence at Madison Square Garden is the latest prototype from Kevin Davies, a friend of Mr Calzaghe for more than 30 years.

The bag is linked to a computer and records everything from number of punches to power, and the computer also tells you if you are punching better from the left or right side of your body. There is an instant readout so that the boxer can immediately concentrate on any areas which need improvement.

Data is stored on a personal swipe card, allowing each user to monitor and analyse their progression.

Giving a demonstration yesterday, Mr Calzaghe recorded almost 600 punches in one minute, a rate of around nine punches per second.

Mr Calzaghe said: "It's excellent, as the weeks go by I monitor my punch output and that doesn't lie."

The Newbridge southpaw added that seeing his figures on screen gave him the push to try and top his previous effort.

Mr Davies, 37, of Cwmnantyrodyn, Pontllanfraith, said the idea has been several years in the making and was thought up as a way to accurately chart a boxer's development.

He said: "It's been fantastic, the whole journey's been great."

Mr Davies was also pleased that his idea is helping the training programme of his old friend, describing him as the "Tiger Woods of boxing."

Mr Calzaghe said when Mr Jones Jnr visited the gym a few weeks ago and was told of the record for number of punches in three minutes, in excess of 1600, he declined to take the challenge.

"He's quick, but not quick enough," said Mr Calzaghe.Article from South Wales Argus October 21st 2008
